Genealogy of Claire, Alex, Sam & Genny Jamison                                        October, 2008

The Zneimer side                                                                                            by Chris Jamison

This file combines both a lineal descent chart and an ancestry chart simultaneously.  It is broken up by generations, with siblings listed adjacently where possible.  Use the hyperlinks to travel up or down generations.  Direct ancestors are listed in italicized fonts.

Families:  Zneimer, Rosenstein, Yates, Hertz, Perlmann, Behr

This Genealogy lists younger generations near the top, and the oldest known generations at the bottom.  Frequently I use hyperlinks to link children to their parents.  This genealogy is best viewed on-line, rather than in print, and in an application that supports the hyperlinks.

See also http://groups.yahoo.com/group/zneimer for Zneimer family genealogy.

Joseph Zneimer graduated from St. John’s Military Academy (Delafield, Wisconsin) in 1921.  St. John’s is now known as St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy.

Joseph was a banker, before joining the Episcopal Priesthood.  He and Helen lived in NYC, then Minnesota for some time, then in New York (Buffalo, then Syracuse).  They had a summer home in the Thousand Islands.  I remember going out in a small boat into the St. Lawrence River as a young boy.  We saw a huge oil tanker and I got very scared, so much so that they had to row me back to shore.  I still don’t like big water.  We visited a few times while they lived in Syracuse, and I stopped in once on a return trip from working in Rochester, NY (Kodak).

The Reverend Canon Joseph William Zneimer’s obituary.

Joe was a banker in New York City.  He took a promotion and moved to Minneapolis, MN.  While there, he became a deacon, then priest (1943).  They moved to Little Falls, MN (March, 1941 – June 1945) before returning to New York (Buffalo).

From www.ellisislandrecords.org:

There is a record for Benjamin Zneimer, age 28 arriving June 03, 1920 as a US Citizen from Kingston, Jamaica on the ship Zacapa.  He is listed as married.  This must be Nicholas’ son Benjamin.  I wonder what he was doing in Jamaica.

Alice E.                       b 5/17/1907                             d 10/4/2001 in NJ  ssn: 138-30-4255

Nicholas married Marie when he was 34 and she 17, by legend in St. Petersburg Cathedral (Selma Zneimer’s book says they were married in Argentina, but this doesn’t make as much sense).  They left Russia for Argentina in 1891.  All the children but Joseph and Alice were born in Argentina.  He was Jewish, but converted at some time.  No one knows the circumstances.  He changed his name from Morris to Nicholas at that time.  Selma Zneimer’s book says Nicholas was an officer in the Russian Army.  This would explain how he met Marie.

Nicholas built a button factory in Newark.  This was sold to the PA Railroad, who built a station on the property.

Marie’s Russian name is Maria Vasiliava.  Mom has many memories of her.  Maria would never tell her about ‘the old country’.

From www.ellisislandrecords.org:

Nicholas arrived at Ellis Island July 24, 1900.  He was 43 years old.  Maria is 29 years old.  Ethnicity of both is listed as Russian.  They came on the ship Hevelius from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  Also arrived son Nicholas (9), son Benjamin (7), son Edward (3), daughter Berta (2), daughter Selma (7m).  Ethnicity of children is listed as Argentine.  I have an image of the ledger sheet.  Notice they left Rio on July 4 – a 20 day sea voyage.  Nicholas and Benjamin can read and write.  Father Nicholas is listed as a grocer.  He references an local relative, brother Herman with address listed, maybe 2229 2nd Avenue?  And it looks like “mother – Catharine”, but who knows.

This matches reasonably well – at least the sons’ ages, if not names.  So I set Edward’s birth year down below.  So I should look in the Ellis Island records for 1905 Zneimers.

Lillian Sable is sister to Selma, who is living with Herman Zneimer in 1920.

xx and  Minnie Zneimer [father Samuel Zneimer] md.   ** father is Schmerl, not Samuel **

Lived in Baltimore.

** need to look her up in 1910, 1920 & 1930 census **

From www.ellisislandrecords.org:

I also found a record for Minie Znaimer (F), age 24, arriving May 03, 1903 from Southampton, UK on the ship New York.  Ethnicity is “Russia, Hebrew”.  Would this be Nicholas’ sister?  Yes!  See record below for their father, Samuel.  Look at the .gif of Minie’s immigration record, which refers to address/relative.  Here she references ‘cousin H Zneimer’ at 2229 2nd Avenue.  Except that Herman would be her brother, not cousin

Only way the ‘cousin’ makes sense is if this Minie is a daughter of Moses that I don’t know about.  That would make her Herman’s cousin.  Or a daughter of Schmerl?

10/2007 – yes! a daughter of Schmerl – brother to Benjamin, progenitor of the UK Zneimers.

This is as far back as we know.  There is a town, Znaim, in Czechoslovakia.  In the 15th century, the Zneim’s moved to the Duchy of Kurland (Baltics).  Nicholas was born in this area.  Since this area [of Latvia] switched between German and Russian control, the census records may show one or the other as an individual’s country of birth.
