Ancestry.com is owned by MyFamily.com, which also runs RootsWeb.com. They also have a site called FamilyHistory.com
http://www.rootsweb.com - they share message boards with ancestry.com
Family Trees:
my family tree entered on-line:
The other big player is Genealogy.com. They are a pay site, and have census indexes not found (yet) on ancestry.com.

GenWeb – here are all the volunteer pages by state & locality. There is lots here.
NY GenWeb page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygenweb/
Orange County: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyorange/
Ulster County: http://www.hopefarm.com/geneatop.htm
St. Lawrence: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nystlawr/
Franklin Co: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyfrankl/
Some good info here, but hard to get references & full family links. They do get credit for having the 1880 census up & free before ancestry.com did.
They do have the Canadian & UK census up. I should check the Canadian one for Brabons, and the UK one for Ures.
A very good resource for ancestors who arrived 1890 to 1920 or so.
A lot of family tree data here.
Their surname index, to start: http://www.gendex.com:8080/display?page=surnames&

www.cyndislist.com - lots to find here
Other Links to sites I haven’t fully explored yet:
http://www.surnameweb.org - seems linked back to ancestry.com
